WorkBoat Article: Shipbuilders Council Honors 21 Shipyards for 2025 Safety Achievements
Four Pacific Northwest shipyards earned recognition in the Shipbuilders Council of America’s annual safety awards for 2025, announced May 18 during the SCA Spring Meeting in Washington, D.C. Vigor Marine Portland (Portland, OR), Vigor Marine Seattle (Seattle, WA), and Vigor Marine Fabrication Vancouver (Vancouver, WA) each received the “Excellence in Safety” award for posting a Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) below the U.S. shipbuilding industry average.
The same three Vigor yards — along with Sause Bros. of Coos Bay, OR — also earned “Improvement in Safety” recognition for achieving a 10% or greater year-over-year TRIR reduction. Vigor Marine Group, headquartered in Portland, operates shipyards across Oregon, Washington, California, and Virginia, serving the U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command, Coast Guard, and Washington State Ferries among other customers.
SCA President Matthew Paxton said this year’s recipients “are setting the standard for what a strong safety culture looks like across the industry.” The awards come as Congress and the administration place greater focus on strengthening America’s shipbuilding industrial base, with SCA Chairman David Carver of General Dynamics NASSCO calling the awardees “leading the way by creating environments where workers can thrive and the industry can continue to deliver for our great nation.”
