Matson christened Makua, the first of three new Aloha Class containerships, at Hanwha Philly Shipyard on October 10, part of a roughly $1 billion fleet renewal program. The 3,600-TEU, approximately 850-foot vessel features LNG-ready dual-fuel engines, a top speed approaching 24 knots, and a freshwater ballast system. Delivery is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027, followed by sister ships in the third quarter of 2027 and second quarter of 2028. The vessels will serve Matson’s Hawaii and China-Long Beach Express networks.
