Germany’s Ver.di union launched a daylong warning strike affecting six seaports—Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Wilhelmshaven, Bremen, Emden, and Brake—bringing most container and cargo operations to a standstill. The action, involving 11,000 union members, began the night of August 17 amid a contract impasse over wages and contract duration. Ver.di is seeking an 8.2 percent wage increase and a 12-month contract, while employer group ZDS offered 5.1 percent and 19 months. New negotiations are scheduled for August 24-25 in Hamburg.
