Marine Insight Article: World's First Waste Collection Vessel Launched At Port Of Klaipeda

The world’s first waste-collection ship has launched at the Port of Klaipeda, Lithuania. Named Rasa, the 42-metre vessel runs on green hydrogen and electricity and can collect up to 400 cubic metres of liquid waste, bilge water and sludge from ships operating in the port — treating it on board so processed water can be transferred to nearby municipal facilities, with no harmful emissions.

Built through a Lithuanian–Estonian joint venture for about €12 million, Rasa is powered by two Genevos 40kW hydrogen fuel cells, a 2MWh EST-Floattech battery system and a Danfoss Editron electric drive, giving it more than 10 hours of continuous battery-only operation while emitting only water vapour. Its green hydrogen is produced locally in Klaipeda, tying the vessel into Lithuania’s emerging hydrogen infrastructure.

By letting ships offload hazardous wastewater and sludge before they leave the Baltic Sea, Rasa is positioned as a model for future clean port-service vessels and a boost to the regional hydrogen economy. It was officially named at a ceremony attended by the First Ladies of Lithuania and Estonia, who framed the ship as a symbol of Baltic cooperation and innovation.
