The Panama Canal Authority is easing draft and transit restrictions after improved rainfall and water-saving measures stabilized conditions in its drought-sensitive watershed. The maximum authorized draft for Neopanamax locks rises immediately from 48 to 49 feet Tropical Fresh Water, and daily Neopanamax transits will increase from nine to 10 beginning October 15, bringing combined Neopanamax and Panamax capacity to 33 vessels per day. The move reverses summer restrictions imposed amid below-normal rainfall, though officials caution the watershed remains in a water deficit.
