All 25 crew members of the MSC containership MSC Hermes III were rescued unharmed on Sept. 22 after abandoning ship roughly 160 nautical miles east of Vietnam, Singapore’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Center reported.
The crew took to a lifeboat and were recovered by the larger MSC Ruby, which responded to the distress call along with two other vessels.
Singapore is arranging with Vietnamese authorities to land the crew. The circumstances behind the abandonment remain unclear, and the derelict, adrift vessel remains afloat with no confirmed salvage plan yet.
