Turkish commandos operating from a naval frigate retook the cargo ship Lutuf off Somalia on Aug. 29, killing 14 pirates after a 10-day operation and rejecting ransom demands that reportedly fell from $10 million to $2 million. The 1,400-dwt vessel, which supplies Turkey’s TURKSOM base, had been hijacked on Aug. 17 by at least eight pirates. All 10 crew members are safe, and the ship has resumed its voyage. Somali pirates continue holding four other vessels seized since April.
