The Navy has completed seismic and operational upgrades to Drydock 4 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Bremerton, Washington, marking the milestone on August 26 under the Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program.

The original seismic retrofit carried a $377.7 million price tag and finished five months early. Additional work pushed the total to $517 million. Crews installed structural anchors, reinforced quay walls and pulled roughly 500 decommissioned keel blocks out of the dock. Engineering modeling let the team cut the anchor count from an estimated 1,000 to about 600, a change that saved both time and money.

“This is a great milestone, delivering capacity back to the shipyard — with added resilience and much-needed improvements,” said Mark Edelson, program executive officer for Infrastructure and Expeditionary. Rear Adm. Omarr Tobias, commander of NAVFAC Pacific, said the team “proved that innovation and close alignment on the waterfront can deliver results ahead of schedule.”

A separate multibillion-dollar effort to build a new multimission drydock at the yard remains in planning, with contract awards expected in 2027.
