TOTE Services has begun assembling the nationwide industrial network that will build the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps’ Medium Landing Ship, drawing more than 30 shipbuilders, equipment manufacturers and defense contractors into the $2.2 billion effort.
The company hosted an LSM Industry Day in Washington that brought in firms from more than a dozen states, walking suppliers through the construction schedule, technical requirements, bidding process and subcontracting opportunities. Attendees included Bollinger Shipyards, Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Fincantieri Marinette Marine, Hanwha Philly Shipyard, ABS, Fairbanks Morse Defense and Schottel.
TOTE was selected in July as Vessel Construction Manager under a contract valued at up to $2.2 billion, coordinating construction of as many as eight vessels. The roughly 4,000-ton ships will carry Marines, vehicles and supplies in contested littorals, and the services envision a 35-ship fleet.
“Under the Vessel Construction Management model, our suppliers are not just vendors, they are critical execution partners,” said TOTE Services President Jeff Dixon.
