Three nuclear-powered commercial ship concepts have received Approval in Principle since June 2026: a Korean molten salt reactor container ship, a Lloyd’s Register-backed car carrier retrofit, and an MIT Maritime Consortium reactor design. While classification societies now view the underlying engineering as feasible, none of the projects has a construction contract or flag-state licensing path. Outdated international codes, no binding liability treaty, and unresolved port-access agreements mean commercial nuclear shipping likely remains decades away from operational reality.
