Maritime Executive Article: Engine Room Fire Kills Two on Bulker Off China

An engine room fire aboard the Singapore-registered bulker Mandy left two seafarers dead and another injured while the vessel was underway off Shandong, northern China, on February 17. The 180,371-dwt vessel, owned by Chinese interests and managed by Pacific Rim Shipmanagement, was carrying 25 Myanmar crewmembers at the time of the incident. The crew successfully extinguished the blaze, but two fatalities were confirmed and a third crewmember was evacuated ashore for medical treatment.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the chief engineer and an oiler were among those affected. A Chinese government rescue vessel reportedly assisted the ship following the fire. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), acting as the vessel’s flag state authority, is coordinating with the company and Chinese officials and has announced plans to launch a formal investigation.

The bulker, built in 2010, had previously been cited for deficiencies during port state inspections in 2025, including machinery and fire safety issues. It was detained for 15 days in Rotterdam in June 2025 after inspectors identified 25 deficiencies. Authorities confirmed there were no reports of pollution, and arrangements are underway to tow the vessel to Yantai Port, China.
