Professional Mariner Article: Port of LA Looks to Build on Third-Best Year in it's History

At the 11th annual State of the Port, Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka outlined an ambitious roadmap for the nation’s busiest port, centered on a “Build Bigger and Build Smarter” strategy to prepare for long-term growth. Seroka announced the port handled 10.2 million TEUs in 2025—its third-best year on record—underscoring the port’s continued role as a critical engine of the U.S. economy. Looking ahead, he highlighted major infrastructure investments, including the proposed Pier 500 Marine Container Terminal, terminal expansions, rail and wharf upgrades, and a new Maritime Support Facility to improve cargo fluidity. On the “Build Smarter” front, Seroka emphasized digital tools like Port Optimizer and the Universal Truck Appointment System, as well as expanded data sharing with neighboring ports. Sustainability remains central to the vision, with record-low emissions per TEU, major zero-emission infrastructure projects, and hundreds of millions of dollars in Clean Ports funding. The address also celebrated the port’s growing cruise business, preparations for the 2028 Olympics, and the coordinated response by port partners and labor to a major vessel fire—reinforcing the port’s focus on resilience, innovation, and community partnership.
