Professional Mariner Article: Eastern gets Go-Ahead from WSF for Two Hybrid Ferries

Eastern Shipbuilding Group has been awarded the notice to proceed from Washington State Ferries (WSF) to construct two 160-vehicle hybrid-electric ferries, with an option for a third. This marks the first competitive ferry construction bid in more than 25 years for the nation’s largest ferry system. The new vessels will feature advanced shoreside charging and battery storage, significantly reducing diesel emissions and supporting reliable service for Washington’s communities. The ferries, designed to carry 1,500 passengers and 160 vehicles, will be fully compatible with existing WSF docks and are expected to set new standards for environmental stewardship and operational excellence. Eastern Shipbuilding, with a legacy of delivering over 350 vessels, brings proven expertise to this historic project.
