A new study commissioned by the Conference of Great Lakes St. Lawrence Governors and Premiers (GSGP) finds the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway region well-positioned to expand shipbuilding capacity. Conducted by the University of Michigan’s Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering program, the report identifies 44 shipbuilding and repair sites and over 12,000 marine suppliers in the region. It outlines five investment pathways—covering technology testing, supply-chain integration, autonomous systems, distributed production, and anchor-yard expansion—aimed at revitalizing the corridor’s industrial base and creating jobs amid growing U.S. and Canadian shipbuilding initiatives.
