The National Transportation Safety Board is calling for stronger visibility and navigation standards for uncrewed surface vessels after investigating a 2024 Lake Erie collision. A recreational boat struck a low-profile SeaTrac research craft operating under remote control, injuring the boat operator and destroying the USV.
Investigators found that the research craft was difficult to detect and inadequately monitored. NTSB recommended design changes to improve its visibility and urged the U.S. Coast Guard to establish national standards covering detectability, collision avoidance and safe navigation for uncrewed vessels.
