The Maritime Executive Article: Chamber of Shipping of America Honors Crews for Maritime Safety Performance
The Chamber of Shipping of America has recognized the crews of the container ship El Coquí and the tanker Stena Immaculate with its annual lifesaving and emergency-response honors, celebrating two teams whose decisive actions prevented loss of life at sea this past year.
Aboard the Crowley-operated El Coquí, the crew responded to a distress call from the SV Mariposa, a sailboat taking on water near the Dominican Republic. The team launched a coordinated rescue and pulled all four sailors aboard safely before the Mariposa went down.
The Stena Immaculate crew earned its recognition under far more chaotic circumstances. While the tanker lay at anchor in the North Sea, it was struck by another vessel and caught fire. The crew’s immediate damage control, evacuation procedures, and coordination with responders prevented what could easily have become a much more serious incident.
