Splash247 Article: Seafarers Kidnapped from LPG Carrier off Equatorial Guinea
A Portugal-flagged LPG carrier, the CGas Saturn, was attacked by pirates about 50 nautical miles west of Mbini, Equatorial Guinea, with at least nine seafarers reportedly kidnapped and one crew member injured. The 2003-built vessel, owned by Denmark’s Christiania Gas and bound for Malabo, was left with only four crewmembers onboard after the assault. With an estimated freeboard of just 2.3 meters, the tanker remains vulnerable to well-organized pirate groups operating in the Gulf of Guinea. The incident adds to a decade of high-profile crew abductions on tankers and general cargo ships in the region, alongside cases involving the Nave Constellation, Davide B, Monjasa Reformer, Hana I, and Bitu River. Despite enhanced naval patrols and coastal cooperation, maritime security remains fragile, with 15 incidents recorded between January and September 2025—up from 12 a year earlier—and 14 crew kidnappings reported in the same period.
