Professional Mariner Article: MARAD Taking Applications for Centers of Excellence Program
The U.S. Maritime Administration (MarAd) has opened applications for its Centers of Excellence (CoE) program for Domestic Maritime Workforce Training and Education, reinforcing federal efforts to strengthen the nation’s maritime workforce. The program, which operates under the U.S. Department of Transportation, supports research, workforce development, collaboration and policy initiatives aimed at revitalizing U.S. shipbuilding capacity and sustaining a skilled labor base both at sea and ashore.
MarAd Administrator Stephen Carmel emphasized that the Centers of Excellence provide critical infrastructure for training the next generation of maritime professionals while enhancing domestic shipbuilding capabilities. The CoE network currently includes 32 institutions across 44 cities in 17 states, with designations awarded for five-year terms. The initiative aligns with broader federal priorities to expand maritime workforce readiness and reinforce America’s competitiveness in global shipping.
Eligible institutions may apply by submitting required materials via email, with applications due by 8 p.m. EST on April 13.
