Austal USA has successfully launched its first steel ship, the future USNS Billy Frank Jr. (T-ATS 11), on June 14, 2025. Named after the Native American activist and Korean War veteran, the 3,100-metric-ton Navy towing, salvage, and rescue ship is the heaviest vessel launched by the shipbuilder to date. The T-ATS platform will combine the roles of retiring rescue and tug vessels, providing multi-mission capabilities such as towing, salvage, rescue, oil spill response, and humanitarian assistance. With over 85% of construction complete, the vessel will soon undergo engine light off, sea trials, and delivery.
