OPB Article: Federal Government Rescinds Oregon’s Offshore Wind Energy Area

The Trump administration has rescinded more than 3.5 million acres of designated Wind Energy Areas (WEAs) nationwide, including nearly 195,000 acres off the Southern Oregon coast, effectively halting years of effort to develop floating offshore wind projects in the region. The U.S. Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) announced the move as part of a broader executive order and policy memorandum aimed at ending federal support for offshore wind. While local proposals faced hurdles such as opposition from residents, fishermen, and tribes, the recent action means any future offshore wind development in Oregon will require restarting the federal siting process. However, state efforts continue: Oregon’s House Bill 4080 directs the development of an Offshore Wind Energy Roadmap, with a final plan expected by mid-2026 to guide future renewable energy projects and community engagement.
