Maritime Executive Article: Port of Long Beach Recovery Completed and Containership Departs

The Port of Long Beach has completed recovery efforts after the rare container collapse incident involving the containership Mississippi at Pier G. Over 18 days, a unified response team—including the Coast Guard, salvage teams, and ILWU workers—recovered all 95 containers that fell overboard, using side-scan sonar, remotely operated vehicles, and dive teams to locate and retrieve submerged and hidden boxes. The safety zone around the site has now been lifted, and the Mississippi, fully offloaded and inspected, has departed for Vietnam. The incident required a complex salvage operation but did not disrupt ongoing port operations. The cause of the collapse remains under investigation by the Coast Guard and NTSB.
