MSC Shipmanagement and Hong Kong Spirit Shipping and Trading each pleaded guilty to two MARPOL counts in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, receiving a combined $1.75 million fine and four years of probation. Prosecutors said crew aboard the containership MSC Samira III bypassed the oil water separator and falsified oil record books to discharge oily bilge water at sea between June 2024 and January 2025, discovered during Coast Guard inspections in Philadelphia. The vessel’s second engineer, Mikhail Tsurikov, also pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing on Sept. 10.
