Global Times Article: World's Largest, China's First 10,000-ton All-Electric Smart Container Vessel Delivered
The world’s largest fully electric container ship officially entered commercial service on April 15, 2026, when the Ningyuan Diankun departed from China’s Ningbo-Zhoushan Port bound for Jiaxing Port — a busy coastal route that has long depended on fossil fuel-powered vessels. Developed by Ningbo Ocean Shipping Co. and designed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute, the 127.8-meter vessel can carry 742 standard containers and represents China’s first 10,000-tonne-class all-electric intelligent container ship, as well as the largest of its kind anywhere in the world.
The ship is powered by 10 standardized containerized battery units with a combined storage capacity of about 20,000 kilowatt-hours — roughly the equivalent of 300 household electric vehicles — driving twin 875-kilowatt permanent-magnet synchronous propulsion motors. It is expected to save 580 tonnes of fuel annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1,400 tonnes per year. Beyond its zero-emission propulsion, the vessel is equipped with a full suite of intelligent navigation systems, including autonomous route planning, real-time collision avoidance, panoramic vessel monitoring, and integrated ship-shore-cloud control — representing a significant leap in maritime automation for coastal trade.
A sister ship, the Ningyuan Dianpeng, is scheduled for sea trials in May and delivery in June. Once both vessels are operating together on fixed routes, Ningbo Ocean Shipping says they will form the backbone of a scaled green shipping network for China’s coastal container sector. China unveiled a national action plan in March 2026 to accelerate AI integration across the shipping industry, setting a goal to operate more than 100 smart vessels and open five pilot routes by 2027.
