China Zorrilla, the world’s largest battery-electric ship, completed its first commercial crossing between Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Colonia, Uruguay, on October 22. Built by Incat Tasmania for Buquebus, the 130-meter catamaran carries up to 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles. An energy storage system exceeding 40 megawatt-hours powers eight electrically driven waterjets, with high-power shore charging at both terminals. Originally designed with dual-fuel engines, the vessel was redesigned for fully electric propulsion and produces no direct exhaust emissions during crossings.
