gCaptain Article: VIKING Helix Shapes Simpler, Easier Ship, Evacuation at Speed
VIKING Life-Saving Equipment has introduced a next-generation marine evacuation system (MES) designed to improve passenger safety, operational efficiency, and maintenance for cruise and ferry operators. The new Helix MES features a multi-person helix-style slide that allows 4–8 people to evacuate simultaneously, enabling the controlled evacuation of up to 477 passengers within 30 minutes into high-capacity life rafts.
The system also incorporates an automated bowsing mechanism that keeps life rafts properly positioned alongside the vessel with minimal crew intervention. This reduces one of the most common failure points in evacuation procedures while improving safety in challenging conditions, including vessel trim and list.
Certified by DNV and designed for both newbuild and retrofit applications, the Helix MES has been tested through harbor and heavy-weather sea trials. With simplified installation and reduced service requirements, the system aims to minimize operational disruption while enhancing overall evacuation performance.
