MARAD has designated 16 additional maritime training institutions as Centers of Excellence, expanding the federal workforce program to 48 institutions across 87 facilities in 28 states and territories, collectively training about 58,000 mariners annually. New designees include the University of Michigan’s naval architecture department, Northwest Maritime Center, Chapman School of Seamanship, Bunker Hill Community College, and Webb Institute, adding nearly 20,000 trainees. The expansion supports the Trump administration’s push to rebuild U.S. shipbuilding capacity and mariner credentialing, per the 2025 maritime dominance executive order.
