The Port of Long Beach has become the first U.S. seaport to formalize a partnership with the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) to advance small modular reactor (SMR) technology for commercial maritime use. The nonbinding Memorandum of Cooperation was signed Wednesday in Washington.
The agreement sets a framework to study nuclear technology for commercial vessels, port operations and other maritime assets, including resilient port microgrids, shoreside power architecture and infrastructure to support emerging propulsion concepts, alongside related workforce development.
Under the deal, the port and MARAD will coordinate with the U.S. Coast Guard, the Department of Energy and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to help define the safety standards, operational protocols and inspection processes needed before SMR-powered vessels could call at U.S. ports.
