The International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) has published an updated version of its “Risk mitigation for the safe ocean and short-sea carriage of electric vehicles” safety guidelines, reflecting the growing presence of EVs in maritime transport and the industry’s evolving understanding of EV fire risks. The guidelines highlight key concerns such as gas accumulation during thermal runaway, higher peak temperatures, and the structural vulnerabilities of car carriers. IUMI recommends a “Fixed First” approach to firefighting and calls attention to the limitations of foam-based systems.
