gCaptain Article: Big Boxships Return to Suez After Two-Year Hiatus

Major container ships from CMA CGM and Maersk have resumed transits through the Suez Canal, marking a cautious but meaningful step toward restoring one of global trade’s most critical routes after nearly two years of disruption. This week, the 23,000-TEU CMA CGM Jacques Saade and the CMA CGM Adonis completed southbound and northbound transits, respectively, while Maersk’s Sebarok became the first Maersk containership to pass through the Bab el-Mandeb and Red Sea corridor since late 2023. The return follows months of Houthi attacks that forced carriers to reroute around the Cape of Good Hope, cutting Red Sea traffic by roughly 60% and driving up costs and transit times. With no new attacks reported since a Gaza ceasefire took effect in October, shipping lines are reassessing the route, though most remain cautious amid elevated war-risk insurance and lingering security concerns. Egyptian officials say traffic is already rebounding, with hundreds of vessels returning in recent months, and view the latest transits as a vote of confidence that could help normalize canal volumes in 2026 if conditions continue to stabilize.
