gCaptain Article: Four Days On, Crews Continue Response to Deep-Seated Cargo Fire Aboard Containership Off Los Angeles
Response operations entered their fourth day Tuesday as the Unified Command continued efforts to fully suppress the fire aboard the containership ONE Henry Hudson, which broke out Friday evening at Berth 218 in the Port of Los Angeles. All 23 crew members were safely evacuated with no injuries, but an onboard explosion and the presence of hazardous materials forced firefighters to withdraw and the vessel to be shifted to an offshore anchorage near Angel’s Gate Lighthouse. Air quality monitoring throughout San Pedro and Wilmington remained within federal and state safety limits, allowing officials to lift a precautionary shelter-in-place order once the ship was safely outside the breakwater. Salvors are now focused on extinguishing remaining hot spots, cooling containers, and managing water accumulation in the cargo holds while contracted tugs perform continuous boundary cooling to protect the hull. A half-mile safety zone and temporary flight restrictions are in place as the Coast Guard coordinates stability assessments and hazardous materials oversight, with port operations largely resumed after initial disruptions to container terminals and State Route 47.
