gCaptain Article: Engine Room Fire Extinguished on Car Carrier Thames Highway off Germany

German emergency services have successfully brought a late-night engine room fire under control aboard the Bahamas-flagged car carrier MS Thames Highway, preventing injuries, pollution, or a wider casualty. The 149-meter vessel became disabled shortly after departing Emden for Grimsby, England, and is now anchored northwest of Borkum outside the Ems estuary fairway. Carrying 1,294 vehicles—including 477 electric cars—the ship suffered an engine room failure that led to the fire. The crew’s swift action to seal the engine room and cut off oxygen proved critical in containing the blaze until specialized maritime firefighters could be airlifted aboard. Germany’s Central Command for Maritime Emergencies coordinated a multi-agency response involving federal police, local fire brigades, rescue vessels, and standby tugs, with Dutch authorities also on alert. With no further fire development reported, the vessel has since been transferred to traffic service control and is being towed back to Emden. The incident comes amid heightened global concern over fire risks on car carriers transporting electric vehicles, as lithium-ion battery hazards continue to challenge maritime safety and emergency response planning.
