Davie Defense Inc. has announced a landmark $1 billion investment to overhaul the historic Gulf Copper shipyard in Galveston, Texas, creating the “American Icebreaker Factory”—a purpose-built facility for constructing next-generation Arctic Security Cutters for the U.S. Coast Guard. Developed in partnership with Pearlson and leveraging proven icebreaker designs from Finland’s Helsinki Shipyard, the project is expected to generate over 2,000 direct jobs and 7,000 statewide, with a projected economic impact exceeding $9 billion. The initiative aligns with U.S. efforts to close the icebreaker gap with Russia and China, support national security, and restore American maritime dominance. Construction is set to begin this fall, reinforcing Texas’s emergence as a hub for advanced shipbuilding and polar vessel production.
