DredgeWire Article: NTSB Finalizes Report of Feb. 25' Fire on Towing Vessel Thor
On February 18, 2025, the towing vessel Thor was operating downbound on the Delaware River, about 1.5 miles downriver from New Castle, Delaware, when a fire erupted in the vessel’s engine room at approximately 9:25 a.m. local time. The four crewmembers on board responded quickly, isolating the fire to the engine room before abandoning the vessel to a nearby tug as a precaution. Shoreside fire department personnel extinguished the blaze, and Thor was subsequently towed safely to port. No injuries were reported, and no pollution occurred as a result of the incident. While the crew’s prompt actions prevented a more serious outcome, the fire caused an estimated $1.5 million in damage to the vessel, underscoring the ongoing risks associated with engine-room fires and the importance of effective emergency response procedures aboard towing vessels.
