The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has approved the permit for the Georgia Ports Authority’s $2.3 billion Savannah Container Terminal after a three-year review. GPA President Kevin Price announced the decision at the annual State of the Port of Savannah event.
The 350-acre terminal on Hutchinson Island will add 3.5 million TEUs of annual capacity and accommodate the largest container ships. Construction is set to begin in January 2028, with completion expected in the mid-2030s. It anchors a nearly $5 billion, 10-year plan to lift Savannah from 7.75 million to 12 million TEUs, alongside a separate $1.6 billion Ocean Terminal redevelopment that is more than 60% complete.
Savannah handled a record 504,015 TEUs in September, up 3.7% year over year. “We play the long game here,” said GPA Chairman Alec Poitevint. Price will succeed CEO Griff Lynch when Lynch retires on Aug. 1, 2027.
