The U.S. Maritime Administration will activate the SUNY Maritime College training ship Empire State for temporary federal service starting on or about Sept. 1, college President Rear Adm. John Okon announced. Few mission details have been disclosed, though the ship will reportedly deploy to Diego Garcia for about 170 days. Marad said the Navy and Military Sealift Command are evaluating options to boost transportation capacity for sailors and civil service mariners supporting Indo-Pacific naval operations. The activation echoes a 2017 precedent, when Empire State VI supported FEMA’s Hurricane Harvey response.
