Oregon State University’s PacWave wave energy testing facility officially opened after a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 27, following over a decade of planning, permitting, and funding delays. The facility includes PacWave North, a smaller shallow-water site, and PacWave South, a grid-connected facility roughly seven miles offshore that transmits power via four undersea cables to a regulation site in Newport. The pre-permitted site allows developers to test wave energy devices without securing individual permits. Federal funding delays have pushed expected power generation to next year.
