A Washington State Ferries crew aboard the Tilikum diverted from its route Friday morning near Orcas Island to assist boaters whose rowboat was rapidly taking on water and unable to maneuver. Responding to a Coast Guard call at about 9:45 a.m., the crew launched a rescue boat and brought the boaters safely to shore without need for medical treatment. Washington State Ferries noted its crews conduct weekly rescue training and are regularly called to assist vessels in distress on the Salish Sea.
