The U.S. Coast Guard is closing Hawaii’s ports ahead of Tropical Storm Lala, which is expected to strengthen into a rare Category 1 hurricane. Port condition Zulu takes effect for all counties by 8 a.m. Saturday, requiring vessels of 200 GT or more to depart unless granted special permission. Lala is forecast to pass near South Point Saturday before weakening, then re-intensifying by midweek as it moves into open ocean.
