Spanish wind propulsion company bound4blue has completed installation of its eSail suction sail on Na Hiro E Pae, marking the first known deployment of wind-assisted propulsion on a multipurpose cargo vessel. The 292-foot newbuild, fitted with a 22-meter sail, will transport passengers, food, and cargo between Tahiti and French Polynesia’s Austral Islands. The system is expected to cut energy consumption by 10 percent while reducing engine load and emissions. Bound4blue has now installed 12 eSails fleet-wide, with six more on order.
