A shrimp boat sank after catching fire at a Pensacola dock over the weekend, spilling diesel fuel into Pensacola Bay. The Capt. Peter II caught fire Saturday night at the Allen C. Williams Boat Yard, with the Pensacola Fire Department arriving within three minutes of the 8:19 p.m. dispatch. The fire originated in the engine room below the waterline, forcing firefighters to work defensively from the dock. No injuries were reported.

By Sunday morning, roughly 100 yards of fuel sheen was visible on the water, though most had dissipated by afternoon through solar evaporation. The exact amount of diesel released remains unknown.

The U.S. Coast Guard scheduled a dive team and a contracted environmental company to assess remaining fuel aboard the sunken vessel and conduct cleanup. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Escambia County emergency officials are also involved in the response.
