The Maritime Executive Article: One Dead, 16 Rescued After Freighter Hits Vietnamese Fishing Boat
One fisherman was killed and 16 others rescued after the newly built Vietnamese general cargo ship Viet Thuan 11-07 collided with the coastal fishing boat BTh 98379 TS off southern Vietnam on Monday morning. The 50-foot purse seiner was nearing the end of a 10-hour run to the fishing grounds, about seven nautical miles east of Tien Phu, when the 11,000-dwt freighter struck it while under way from Nui Thanh toward Ho Chi Minh City.
The force of the impact capsized the fishing vessel, throwing all 17 crew into the water. Survivors took refuge atop the overturned hull and pulled one shipmate to safety, but the man — who had an underlying health condition — could not be revived. A nearby fishing vessel rescued the survivors, most of whom returned to shore at Phu Hai while the skipper remained on scene to watch over the wreck.
The cargo ship was detained and diverted to an anchorage at Phan Thiet for an investigation. Viet Thuan 11-07 is a brand-new Vietnamese-flagged vessel operated by a company managing a fleet of more than one million deadweight tonnes across coastal, riverine and deep-sea trades.
