WorkBoat Article: Siemens Energy to build shoreside charging stations for Washington State Ferries
Siemens Energy has been selected as systems integrator to build new shoreside charging stations for Washington State Ferries (WSF), supporting the largest U.S. ferry system’s long-term electrification and decarbonization strategy. Under the contract, Siemens Energy will provide engineering, systems integration, and medium-voltage shore-power infrastructure across WSF terminals to enable high-power charging for hybrid-electric and future battery-electric ferries.
WSF carries nearly 25 million passengers a year on 10 routes and is the single largest consumer of diesel fuel in Washington state government, making terminal electrification central to cutting emissions and improving Puget Sound air quality. Officials said the project will deliver the critical electrical infrastructure needed for reliable, future-ready charging as the fleet transitions.
Siemens Energy said the terminal solution adapts maritime electrification technologies it developed in Europe — including early electric-ferry deployments in Norway — to the operational scale and regulatory requirements of Washington State Ferries.
