Maritime Executive Article: Video Shows Containership Hitting and Pushing Two Ferries in Santos Harbor

A containership maneuvering in Brazil’s Port of Santos collided with two ferries on February 16, prompting crew members to jump into the harbor to avoid injury. Video circulating online shows the Singapore-flagged Seaspan Empire, a 67,447-dwt vessel with a 5,100-TEU capacity, pushing the smaller ferries across the harbor during the nighttime incident. Onlookers can be heard warning of the impending collision as contact is made.

According to media reports, at least four crew members—including the captain and three deckhands—entered the water and were later rescued with assistance from bystanders and a responding pilot boat. No serious injuries were reported. The ferries, which operate between Santos and Guarujá, were out of service at the time and carried no passengers or vehicles. The containership, reportedly maneuvering toward the Embraoport terminal, sustained minor bow damage and was temporarily held at anchorage for inspection before being cleared to proceed to the DP World terminal. The ferries were secured and are undergoing inspection.
