gCaptain Article: Fire-Damaged ONE Henry Hudson Departs Los Angeles After Two-Month Salvage Effort

The fire-damaged containership ONE Henry Hudson has departed the Port of Los Angeles bound for repairs in Asia, bringing to a close one of the most complex salvage operations the port has faced in recent history. The vessel sailed from Yusen Terminal on January 21, exactly two months after a fire erupted in its lower-deck compartments while moored at the port on November 21, 2025. What began as an emergency firefighting response evolved into a highly coordinated, multi-phase salvage effort involving the U.S. Coast Guard, Los Angeles Fire Department, port authorities, and international salvage specialists. All 23 crew members were safely evacuated, though a midship explosion during the fire disabled the vessel and required crews to fight the blaze from shore. Extensive flooding in one cargo hold and concerns over hazardous materials added to the operational challenges. Following cargo discharge, General Average declaration, and weeks of stabilization work led by DONJON-SMIT, the ship was cleared for departure. Investigations by the Coast Guard and NTSB into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
