gCaptain Article: Sixteen Containers Lost from Baltic Klipper: Multi-Agency Response Underway in England

A large shoreline cleanup operation is underway along the West Sussex coast after the cargo ship Baltic Klipper lost 16 containers into the Solent near the Nab Tower on Saturday evening. By Monday, 11 containers had washed ashore at Selsey, Pagham Harbour, and Bognor, with nine breaking open and scattering fruit and polystyrene across beaches and nearby residential areas. The boxes were carrying non-hazardous cargo—mainly bananas, plantain, and avocados—plus several empties, and no crew injuries were reported. Arun District Council, Chichester District Council, and West Sussex County Council are leading the response with contractor Ambipar, which is using shoreline assessment techniques to collect, categorize, and dispose of waste, including debris that has reached private gardens. HM Coastguard is searching offshore for the remaining containers while authorities maintain cordons, warn the public about sharp metal hazards, and remind residents that wreck material must be reported to the Receiver of Wreck, as the cleanup is expected to take time.
