Maritime Executive Article: Pirates Attack LPG Carrier, Kidnap Crew Off West Africa

An LPG carrier operating under the Portuguese flag has become the latest target of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, with nine crewmembers kidnapped and one injured in a boarding west of Equatorial Guinea. The 2003-built CGAS Saturn, owned by Christiania Gas and bound for Malabo, was attacked about 50 nautical miles off the coast, where armed pirates rounded up the crew, stole personal belongings, and seized nine seafarers before departing. Four crewmembers, including the second and third captains, a deck officer, and an oiler, were left onboard, and the injured seafarer is reported to have sustained only light injuries and received medical care on the ship. A Portuguese Navy patrol boat was dispatched to intercept, while the CGAS Saturn proceeded to safe waters, and the company activated its emergency response team to coordinate with authorities. Security firms note the incident reinforces the persistent kidnap-for-ransom threat in the region, with at least 17 armed robbery or piracy events reported over the past 12 months and 15 incidents logged in 2025 alone, involving the kidnapping of 14 seafarers between January and September.
