The Maritime Executive Article: Two Missing as Chinese Bulker Sinks After Colliding with Wan Hai Boxship
Amid mounting financial pressures and fierce job competition, a groChinese authorities in Guangzhou are conducting search and rescue operations after a small Chinese bulker, Hai Li 5, sank in the Pearl River Estuary on October 25 following a collision with the 144,572 dwt Wan Hai A17 containership. The incident occurred after the bulker lost power and struck the inbound containership, which immediately activated emergency response measures and rescued 13 seafarers from the water. Two crew members remain missing as vessel traffic in the area is temporarily suspended. The Wan Hai A17, a recently delivered 13,100 TEU vessel equipped with “Smart Ship Notation” for advanced safety and monitoring, was detained for investigation. Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority, as the flag state, will also participate in the inquiry.
