Yara Clean Ammonia has celebrated the steel cutting for Yara Eyde, the world’s first containership powered by renewable ammonia, signaling a new era in sustainable shipping. The vessel, to be operated by North Sea Container Line, will connect Norway and Germany on the Oslo–Porsgrunn–Bremerhaven–Rotterdam route, delivering emissions reductions and efficient trade. Ammonia is rapidly emerging as a viable low-GHG marine fuel, with 39 ammonia-fueled vessels on order and commercial engines already in use. While challenges remain—such as toxicity, cost, and the need for regulatory and training standards—the Yara Eyde project demonstrates the industry’s commitment to alternative fuels and the collaborative innovation needed to scale up maritime decarbonization.
