TradeWinds Article: Hackers 'disable' Communications on More than 60 Iranian Tankers and Cargo Ships
The hacker group Lab-Dookhtegan (“Sewn Lips”) has claimed a new cyber attack against Iranian shipping, reportedly disabling communications on 39 tankers and 25 cargo ships operated by National Iranian Tanker Co (NITC) and Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL). The attack, which targeted satellite terminals managed by Fanava Group, left affected vessels unable to connect to shore facilities or operate AIS, severely disrupting operations. This follows a similar incident in March, with hackers claiming root-level access to shipboard Linux systems and the ability to halt critical maritime communications software. Both NITC and IRISL are already under U.S. sanctions, and the latest breach highlights the rising cyber risk facing global shipping.
