Professional Mariner Article: Red Sea Rerouting Leads to Spike in Container Losses
The World Shipping Council (WSC) reports that 576 containers were lost at sea in 2024, an increase from 2023’s record-low 221 but still well below the 10-year average of 1,274. This year’s uptick was largely driven by global trade disruptions in the Red Sea region, which forced a 191% increase in vessel transits around the hazardous Cape of Good Hope—accounting for about 200 container losses in that area alone. Despite these challenges, the loss rate remains exceptionally low at just 0.0002% of all containers transported. The WSC highlights ongoing safety initiatives, including the upcoming mandatory IMO reporting, the Top Tier Joint Industry Project, a 2025 cargo safety screening program, and new regulations for charcoal shipments.
